Your story is divided, as many stories are, into chapters. This game uses some terminology to help you break up the story. These terms are also used in certain abilities.
Term | Description | Average Time in Game | Average Time to Play |
Scene | One Encounter, the entirety of action in a single location with a single challenge. Think of it like the scene of a play. This could be a fight, a conversation, exploring a dungeon room, or overcoming an obstacle during travel. The spaces between Encounters are Respites. | 1-30 minutes | 1-30 minutes |
Act | The entirety of action between Rests. An Act includes a set of 2-4 related Tactical Scenes and can have up to 9 Scenes total. Think of it like an act in a play or a chapter of a book. This could be a dungeon, a tournament, a court case, or a full month of travel. Typically, an Act will be about 6 hours of gameplay. The spaces between Acts are Interludes. Effects that last for an Act are said to last until a Rest. | 1-12 hours | 1-3 hours |
Quest | A set of related Acts, usually 2-6 of them. A Quest is like one episode in a show or a book in a series. A quest is often a single story or mission. The spaces between Quests are Intermissions. | 1 day – 3 months | 1-3 sessions |
Campaign | A Campaign, or Adventure, is a set of related Quests, anywhere from 1-12 Quests long. A Campaign is like the entire series of books, the whole game, the tale from start to finish. | 1 week – 10 years | 6-24 sessions |
